# HostGator review 2026: a reliable US cPanel host whose real prices start at renewal

HostGator's four shared plans with the monthly, yearly and three-year prices and renewals from its own price service, the 30-day refund rules, its server locations, and the published measurements.

## Verdict

HostGator is a safe, ordinary choice for a US site: cPanel, a free domain, Cloudflare CDN, staging and object caching on every plan, and the best published uptime record among the budget hosts we cover (99.97 percent over 243 days on Hatchling, HostingStep, 2025 to 2026). The price is the catch: the $3.75 headline needs a three-year term, Hatchling renews at $10.99 on that term and $13.19 on a yearly one, backups are weekly and called a courtesy, and the entry plan has no phone support. Buy Baby on three years if you want HostGator; skip it if you want a short term or daily backups.

Best for

- Beginners who want cPanel, a free domain and chat support on a US host
- WordPress sites that want staging and object caching on a cheap plan
- Owners who accept a three-year term for the lowest first price
- Sites that host several small domains on one account

Skip it if

- You want daily backups included
- You need a server outside the US or a choice of data center
- You want phone support on the cheapest plan

## How HostGator scores

Six sub-scores with their weights. Scores updated Oct 14, 2026. [How each one is computed](https://hostidea.com/methodology#scoring).

- **Uptime (weight 20%)**: 8.0

- **Support (weight 15%)**: 7.0

### What we liked

- **Published uptime over eight months.** HostingStep recorded 99.97 percent with 7 outages and 1 hour 21 minutes of downtime on Hatchling from 1 October 2025 to 31 May 2026; Cybernews saw 100 percent over a month in 2025.
- **Staging, object caching and a CDN on every plan.** WordPress staging, static and object caching, Cloudflare with Argo routing, SSH and WP-CLI are listed on all four tiers, including Hatchling.
- **Free domain and SSL.** A domain for the first year and auto-renewed Let's Encrypt certificates on every plan.
- **Every price for every term is published.** The page's price service returns the discounted and regular price for the monthly, yearly and three-year terms; we list all of them.
- **A long record.** Hosting since 2002, Texas-based, now one of Newfold Digital's brands alongside Bluehost.

### What held it back

- **Renewals are three to four times the headline.** Hatchling is $3.75 a month on a three-year term and renews at $10.99 on that term, $13.19 on a yearly term and $17.59 month to month.
- **Weekly courtesy backups.** The page lists weekly backups and the terms call them a courtesy; there is no daily backup on shared plans.
- **Slow first byte in the longest test.** HostingStep measured a 496 ms average TTFB from US locations over 243 days, in the bottom half of the hosts it monitors, and a 2 percent error rate at 100 concurrent users.
- **Chat only on Hatchling.** Phone support starts with Baby; the terms route refunds through phone or live chat.
- **No resource figures, no location choice.** The plan page prints visit guidance but no CPU, RAM or inode limits, and the help center says servers sit mostly in Provo and Atlanta with no way to choose.

## What did our tests show?

HostIdea has not opened its own monitoring window for HostGator yet, so there is no HostIdea uptime or response figure on this page. The published measurements we could find are listed below, attributed to the people who ran them. This section will carry our data when a window completes.

No test results published yet.

### What do published measurements show?

Longest independent window: 99.97% uptime over 1 October 2025 to 31 May 2026 (HostingStep). Response times reported: 496 ms (HostingStep, average TTFB from US locations over the window (374 to 865 ms range, 349,920 tests)), 112 ms (Cybernews, average response during the monitoring window), 143 ms (WPBeginner, average response time in the summary table; Bitcatcha measured 26 ms from the US).

Measurements published by others, as they state them. HostIdea did not run these tests; each row links to its source and shows the date we read it.

## Is HostGator a good web host?

Yes for a plain US website, with eyes open on price. The plans carry the things that usually cost extra elsewhere: a free domain, Cloudflare’s CDN, a staging site, object caching and SSH, all on Hatchling. The published measurements say it stays up (99.97 percent over eight months in HostingStep’s window) and copes with bursts (three load tests without failures at 50 users, 2 percent errors at 100). The first-byte time from the US is slow in the longest test, backups are weekly, and the price you see assumes three years paid up front. Everything below is a published fact we checked on 14 October 2026 or a gap we name.

## What do you get on each plan?

All four plans include cPanel behind HostGator’s portal, unmetered bandwidth, a free domain for the first year, auto-renewed Let’s Encrypt SSL, a site migration tool, Cloudflare CDN with Argo routing, managed WordPress updates, malware scanning, a web application firewall, DDoS protection, static and object caching, SSH and WP-CLI, a WordPress staging site, weekly courtesy backups, one-click installs, unlimited MySQL databases and SFTP users, PHP 8.2, Ruby on Rails, Perl and Python. The tiers differ by site count (10, 20, 50, 100), SSD storage (10 to 100 GB), visit guidance (40,000 to 400,000 a month), support channel (chat only on Hatchling, phone and chat above) and extras: Baby adds AI-powered malware removal, Business and Pro add a year of domain privacy, and Pro is sold as “more speed and processing power” without a figure.

The page gives no CPU, RAM, inode or process limits for any plan. One inconsistency: the plan cards list a free site migration tool while the comparison table lower on the page says paid migration is available for the same plans.

The cards show a three-year term by default. The page’s own price service, which fills the cards, returns three terms per plan with a discounted first price and a regular price: monthly, one year and three years. The three-year term is the cheapest per month in both columns (Hatchling at $3.75, then $10.99), the yearly term costs a little more ($4.21, then $13.19) and monthly billing has a small discount in the first month only ($12.95, then $17.59). Discounts are for first-time customers, per the terms, and the monthly term has no money-back guarantee.

### Three-year cost on the entry plan

| Route | Years 1 to 3 |
| --- | --- |
| 36 months up front | $135 (renews at $395.61 for the next three years) |
| 12 months, renewed twice | $50.49 + $158.27 + $158.27 = $367.03 |
| Month to month | $12.95 + $17.59 × 35 = $628.60 |

## How do refunds work?

Section 13 of the general terms gives a full refund of basic shared, VPS, dedicated and reseller hosting fees if you cancel within the first 30 days of the initial term, requested by phone or live chat. It excludes monthly terms, domain registration, administrative and setup fees, add-ons such as SiteLock, and payments made by any method other than PayPal or a card; a free domain costs $22.99 out of the refund if you cancel within the year. After 30 days there are no refunds for cancellation. Services auto-renew until you cancel, and discounts are reserved for first-time customers. The terms say the date of the last revision is shown at the bottom of the agreement; the copy we read carried no date in its text.

## What is the infrastructure?

HostGator’s help center says most of its servers are in Provo, Utah and Atlanta, Georgia, with some elsewhere, that customers cannot choose a data center, and that accounts may be migrated to a different facility during upgrades. HostingStep’s 2026 test site answered from Northern Virginia, so “some elsewhere” includes the US East Coast. Cloudflare’s CDN is included and caches static files; HostingStep notes that HTML still comes from the origin. The feature list names an NGINX caching layer and a DDoS scrub center. The plan page states a 99 percent uptime guarantee; the general terms we read contain no uptime clause or credit schedule.

## How fast and reliable is it?

HostingStep’s review by Mohan Raj, updated on 19 August 2026, monitored a Hatchling site from 1 October 2025 to 31 May 2026:

- 99.97 percent uptime over the 243 days, with 7 outages and 1 hour 21 minutes of downtime, about 10 minutes a month.
- An average TTFB of 496 ms from US locations across 349,920 tests, in a 374 to 865 ms range, which the page places in the bottom half of the 34 hosts it monitors.
- A load test at 100 concurrent users with a 213 ms average response and a 2 percent error rate.
- A cached global TTFB of 426 ms across 40 locations, 79 ms from Northern Virginia where the origin sits and 400 ms from São Paulo.
- A WPBench server score of 9.6 out of 10, matched only by Bluehost, which shares HostGator’s infrastructure.

Cybernews, in a review by Aurelija Tomkevičiūtė updated on 19 September 2025, monitored a US-hosted site for about a month: 100 percent uptime with 99.73 percent reachability, a 112.04 ms average response, a 793 ms Largest Contentful Paint, an 821 ms full load and a 50-user stress test that held 21 ms with no failures.

WPBeginner’s review, dated 22 March 2025, reports a 989 ms Pingdom load, a 143.4 ms average response in its summary (26 ms from the US on Bitcatcha), and a k6 run up to 50 users at a 126 ms average. It monitored uptime with UptimeRobot but prints no figure.

Read together: dependable uptime and good behaviour under modest load, with a first-byte time from the US that is fine in the short tests and slow in the long one. Only HostingStep names its plan; none of the three names the data center it landed in.

## How good is the support?

24/7 chat on every plan and phone from Baby up, with a knowledge base, video tutorials, a Facebook group and webinars listed on the about page. Billing, including refunds and domain cancellations, is by phone or live chat. HostScore describes fast, clear responses in the main but lists complaints about billing, and its page shows 44 positive and 20 negative submissions; WPBeginner notes that some readers with frequent downtime were told to upgrade. We have not timed tickets ourselves and will add real ones to the support table on this page.

## Who owns HostGator, and where is it?

HostGator.com, LLC, “Texas raised” with Houston and Austin communities per the about page, hosting since 2002 and claiming more than 2.5 million websites. The general terms point to Newfold Digital’s legal pages for AI services, and HostingStep describes HostGator and Bluehost as brands of the same parent sharing infrastructure. HostScore dates the founding to October 2002 by Brent Oxley in Boca Raton, Florida, with the move to Houston in 2006, which HostGator’s own pages do not repeat, so we cite it as HostScore’s account.

## What is missing or unclear?

- Whether site migration is free (the cards) or paid (the comparison table).
- Any CPU, RAM or inode limit per plan.
- The uptime guarantee’s terms: the page says 99 percent, the general terms say nothing.
- Which data center a new account lands in.
- HostIdea’s own monitoring, support timing and load testing have not started.

## Who should choose HostGator, and who should wait?

Choose it if you want a US cPanel host with a free domain, staging and a CDN, you are willing to pay three years up front, and you will keep your own backups. Baby at $162 for three years is the plan to buy: 20 sites, 20 GB and phone support, against Hatchling’s chat-only $135.

Wait if the term or the backups bother you. Hostinger renews lower with daily backups and published measurements; Bluehost is the same platform with a 30-day refund on the full term and a different plan mix; HostArmada gives 45 days, daily backups and nine locations on a 12-month term.

## How we scored this review

The scores on this page are provisional. Uptime rests on HostingStep’s 243-day window and Cybernews’s month. Performance weighs a slow long-window TTFB against three good load tests. Features credit the domain, CDN, staging and caching on every plan, and deduct for weekly backups, no resource figures and no location choice. Value weighs renewals of $10.99 to $29.69 behind a three-year term. Support reflects chat-only entry support, phone above it and mixed public feedback, not timed tickets. Ease of use credits cPanel behind a simple portal. Each score will be recomputed when our own data exists, and the review history on this page will show the change.

## Frequently asked questions

- **### What does HostGator cost after the first term?**: On the three-year term Hatchling renews at $10.99 a month, Baby at $16.49, Business at $21.99 and Pro at $29.69. On a yearly term the renewals are $13.19, $18.69, $24.19 and $31.89, and month to month $17.59, $24.19, $30.79 and $38.49. The headline prices ($3.75, $4.50, $6.25 and $13.95) apply to the first three-year term only.

- **### How does HostGator's money-back guarantee work?**: You can get a full refund of shared hosting fees if you cancel within 30 days of the initial term by calling billing or using live chat. It does not apply to monthly terms or to payments made by anything other than PayPal or card, domains and setup fees are excluded, and $22.99 is deducted for a free domain. After day 30 there are no refunds.

- **### Where are HostGator's servers?**: Mostly in Provo, Utah and Atlanta, Georgia, according to HostGator's help center, with some in other locations. You cannot choose the data center. HostingStep's test site answered from Northern Virginia.

- **### Does HostGator include backups?**: Weekly courtesy backups that you can restore from the portal. The terms describe them as a courtesy, so the page recommends keeping your own copies. There is no daily backup on the shared plans.

- **### Who owns HostGator?**: HostGator.com, LLC, founded in 2002 and based in Houston and Austin, Texas. Its terms point to Newfold Digital's legal pages, the owner of Bluehost; HostingStep notes the two brands share infrastructure.

## Review history

1. Oct 14, 2026First version built from verified sources, read in a browser because the site blocks plain requests behind Cloudflare: the web hosting page (four plans with their inclusions, the comparison table), the prices for the monthly, 12-month and 36-month terms from the page's own price service (getProductPrice, which returns the discounted and regular price per term), the general terms of service (30-day guarantee by phone or chat, not on monthly terms, $22.99 domain deduction, no refunds after 30 days, auto-renewal), the about page (2002, Houston and Austin) and the help center article on data centers (Provo and Atlanta, no choice). Published measurements by HostingStep (243-day window on Hatchling), Cybernews (September 2025) and WPBeginner (March 2025) are stored in thirdParty\[\]; HostScore is kept as an aggregate; no Kripesh Adwani review of HostGator exists. No HostIdea monitoring window is open, so the scores are provisional: uptime rests on HostingStep's 99.97 percent and Cybernews's 100 percent month, performance on a slow US TTFB against fast load tests, support on chat-only entry support and mixed feedback, features on the inclusions against weekly backups and no resource figures, value on renewals of $10.99 to $29.69 behind a three-year term. The weekly price check needs a browser that the site's bot filter accepts: a headed browser received the prices, a headless run on 14 October 2026 saw placeholders.
